Eye Dissection Photos

The dissection photos on this page were taken as I dissected the cow's eye according to the directions given to the students.  I kept the photos on a high-quality resolution so they would be clear, but it also means they may take a moment or two to download.  Please be patient!

More photographs and a video can be seen at the link below.  The video is a helpful tutorial to watch before you do your dissection.  The eye on the video will look different because it is not preserved.

After removing the fat and extra muscle, the eye should look clean.

Cut the eye in half so that you have a front half and a back half.

The pupil/cornea will be on the front half.

This is the front half of the eye after the iris has been lifted out by hand.

In this photo, the cornea is seen on the left.

On the right is the circular iris, and the horizontal opening is the pupil.

The jelly-like vitreous humor is on the left and the lens is on the right.

The back of the eye reveals the colorful tapetum which reflects light back into the eye.

The retina is usually spread out, but is seen here as a clump of tissue because the vitreous humor has been removed.

The point of attachment at the back of the eye is the beginning of the optic nerve.
